Scientists have discovered an underwater lake, 3,300 feet under the surface of the Gulf of Mexico. The lake is a pool of ultra-saline water, which is full of methane.

The river water is so toxic that it will kill any animal which happens to fall in it. The Jacuzzi of Despair was discovered by E/V Nautilus, a research vessel based out of San Pedro.

The salt water lake or brine pool contains water which is so heavy that it forms its distinct territory. It is extremely salty and at the very same time has very low oxygen content.

The Nautilus website says that the lake forms "ominous craterlike images on sea floor maps." The temperature of the lake was reportedly also higher than its surroundings. The temperature in the lake measured at 65 degrees while the surrounding water was at 39 degrees.

Scott Wankel, a scientist with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, said that the lake water kills any marine creature that falls in it. Their bodies are pickled and preserved. Such salt lakes are helpful in exploring underwater geological and biological phenomenon. Scientists plan to use the samples discovered to learn more about creatures which can survive in extreme conditions. The Jacuzzi of Despair has been found to have more lively ecosystem than other underwater lakes.

The Jacuzzi of Despair is circular in shape. Its circumference is about 100 feet while its depth is expected to be nearly 12 feet. The lake's water is four to five times more saline than its surrounding water. Due to its salinity, the water is highly dense as well.
