Once it became clear that Donald J. Trump would win the presidential election, some people started to question the role that the social media platform played. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg addressed the issue by defending his company in an official statement posted on his personal Facebook wall.

Zuckerberg said that Facebook is not a news media company and everyone is free to share their opinions on the platform. He addressed the concerns by posting a note on his page to make it clear that 99 percent of the news published by the platform is accurate, and if small amounts of hoaxes may exist, he clarified that it is not limited to one partisan view.

Throughout this year's presidential campaign, Facebook has been an avenue for many journalists to create, distort, and eventually control the news and information that are relayed to the public. It is because of this reason that the social media platform has ended up becoming the eye of a postelection storm. The New York Times reported that the over the last few days, the social media platform has received a budding number of allegations and criticisms because many believe that many of its stories were slanted toward the Republican side.

Zuckerberg had anticipated the scrutiny over Facebook's role in the election because he was well aware of the social media's powerful influence over the people. He defended the company by reiterating that its position was not aimed at determining the truth. It was more concerned about audience engagement rather than the quality of the news content published.

This reasoning, according to critics, makes Facebook's position obscure. Gizmodo reported that critics continue to place Facebook in the hot seat because "it is currently being reckless with its unprecedented position."
