The Doomsday Clock is now pushing closer to midnight, a grave warning how the world is coming closer to its end. Scientists have now pushed the clock to two minutes and 30 seconds before midnight after the election of Donald Trump.

This new time symbolizes when Earth is getting closer to global war and destruction, according to the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, warning humanity for the past 64 years. This clock also determines when the world is vulnerable to global destruction such as nuclear, political and environmental threats. In 2016, it was set to three minutes before midnight.

According to theoretical physicist Lawrence Krauss, this current political climate across the United States is a particular concern. Krauss explains that the Trump administration should be able to state clearly and unequivocally that climate change is real and is caused by human activities. Last year, the United Nations Paris Climate Agreement was adopted by 195 countries to combat climate change. Last year was also the hottest year ever on record.

Trump's cabinet picks are skeptics where several of them have questioned global warming such as Office of Management and Budget's head Mick Mulvaney, which opens the possibility for US to be hostile to any kind of modest effort in combating climate change and global warming.

Apart from climate change, there are nuclear weapons in possession by Russia and the United States including ongoing nuclear testing in North Korea. There are also political and military tensions in the Ukraine, Syria and Kashmir which makes it more dangerous than last year.

According to Thomas Pickering of the board of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, Trump mentioned casually about nuclear weapons during the elections and his first few days in office. According to executive director and publisher of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, Rachel Bronson, loose and dangerous words and rhetoric are now commonplace.

Krauss adds, policy that is sensible requires facts that are facts. Now, scientists from around the world are calling on the US. Congress and the Trump administration to embrace science when it comes to policy making especially about climate change.

The closest time that the Doomsday clock in striking midnight was in 1953, at two minutes before midnight. This is the year when the United States upgraded its weapons with the H-bomb or hydrogen bomb which is far more powerful than any atomic bomb.

In 2015, it was three minutes to midnight and last year remains unchanged. The Doomsday Clock was established in 1947 by American scientists who were involved in the Manhattan Project in the hopes of providing an urgent warning to mankind posed by nuclear war.
