Energy drinks are good if taken moderately. However, too much consumption of it can have dangerous and harmful effects on the body.

Previous studies have indicated that certain ingredients found in energy drinks such as vitamin B and ginseng are good for the health. But, these ingredients may also be harmful and can cause some serious health conditions like diabetes, miscarriage, or poor dental health.

Sugar Overload

Some brands of energy drinks have up to 62 grams of sugar, which is equivalent to 15½ teaspoons of sugar.

Unhealthy Doses of Caffeine

A typical serving of coffee has 150 milligrams of caffeine, while some energy drinks contain up to 500 milligrams. This accounts for the immediate side effects which can also explain why insomnia, nervousness, and headaches occur on people with too much consumption of energy drinks.

It can Cause Addiction

When drinking energy drink becomes a habit, it may lead to dependency. People who become addicted to energy drinks will encounter withdrawal symptoms like headaches, fatigue, feelings of nervousness, restlessness, and gastrointestinal disturbance.

Dangerous when Combined with Medication

Mixing energy drinks with medications should be avoided since some of its ingredients might interact negatively with prescription medications, particularly those taken for depression. Also, mixing energy drinks and alcohol can be extremely dangerous.

It can Cause Heart Problems

Cardiac problems are common among teens after they consume energy drinks, according to a study by The Canadian Journal of Cardiology. The researchers found that energy drinks double the risk of cardiac events especially in teens with heart condition and the danger will increase when partnered with exercise. The study concluded that energy drinks should never be consumed before or after exercise, or by people who are at high risks of heart conditions.

It can Cause Death

In 2012, there were 13 reported deaths since 2009 because of five-hour energy shots alone, according to the Food and Drug Administration. Additional cases were reported of overdoses of energy drinks specifically among children and teens, and there were also 30 life-threatening situations including convulsions and heart attacks.
