Cancer remains one of the most dreaded diseases today despite technological advancements. Now, experts are taking some drastic steps to fight the condition including the manipulation of hybrid-sperm micromotors.

The use of Nano and micro-architectures against diseases is one of the unconventional ways being perfected by experts. Micromotors is being considered for various biomedical and environmental applications, according to IOP Science.

One of the possible uses of the technology is being perfected by experts at the Institute of Nanosciences in Germany. The scientists have developed a prototype of a drug delivery method to fight cancer cells and tumors by simply manipulating hybrid-sperm micromotors.

Mariana Medina-Sánchez and her team are looking into what the human sperm can contribute to the drug delivery system, according to Futurism. The scientists discovered a unique function of the human sperm when it was submerged in an active ingredient found in cancer-treating drugs.

The sperm can absorb large doses of the treatment drugs, making it useful for their studies and use of nano and micro technology. According to the researchers, the drug coated sperm may be used as a tool to kill cancer cells and tumors in the human body.

Scientists would only have to assemble the drug-coated sperm into a microscopic mechanical harness, creating sperm-hybrid micromotors. This micromotor may then be guided by doctors in the direction of the tumor. Therefore, making the procedure more direct and potent for cancer treatment.

However, the new approach is still being perfected by Medina-Sánchez and her team. There are still some questions needed to be addressed including how the drug-coated sperm can be led to the reproductive system as drug-delivery agents without causing pregnancy.

The new approach to fighting cancer is indeed promising. With proper funding and backing from the right agencies, it could form part of our cancer treatment methods.
