Air pollution is a significant problem in the world since more than 5.5 million of the population die from it each year. Over 3 million of these deaths occur in China and India, making these countries the two deadliest air populated destinations in the world.

According to researchers from the American Association for the Advancement of Science, 1.4 million die each year in India, while China accounts for 1.6 million. These numbers are the reason why air pollution is the 4th highest risk of death and the leading cause for environmental disease.

For those unaware, coal is the top cause for heart disease, according to a recent study, reported by The Washington Post.

If the world can reduce pollution, then it is possible the health of humans and wildlife alike could likely increase in a big way.

"Air pollution is the fourth highest risk factor for death globally and by far the leading environmental risk factor for disease," said Dr. Michael Brauer, a professor at the University of British Columbia's School of Population and Public Health, in a statement to Christian Science Monitor.

Due to these troubling numbers, both India and China have decided to take some steps to tend to their respective problems when it comes down to air pollution. Such a move should then, in turn, reduce the high number of premature death each year.

China and India are the two largest nations in terms of population. This is one of the reasons why so many die each year, and because both countries have done little to solve the problem.

At the moment, we understand that China is performing measurements to test the quality of air in order for environmentalists to track progress. Furthermore, we understand there might be a possible decrease in pollution levels, but it is too early to say for sure right now.

At the recently held Paris Climate Talks, the Chinese government stated that it hopes to have a peak in emissions by the year 2030 and with 20 percent less carbon electricity sources in the country. As for India, the country plans to cut emissions by a whopping 33-35 percent by 2030. Furthermore, it is looking into getting 40 percent of its fuel from non-fossil fuel sources.

Scientists are hoping that the 5.5 million deaths per year from air pollution will catch the eyes of leaders in hopes for a change.
