HIV/AIDS Cure Update 2017: Anti-Retroviral (ARV) Drugs Remains High Priority Over Alternative Medications

Definitive HIV/AIDS cure is yet to be developed by experts. That is why the Nigerian government and similar agencies are warning people who are abandoning the Anti-Retroviral (ARV) treatment drugs over so-called alternative medicines.

The concern for growing incidents of HIV and AIDS have caused the Nigerian authorities to be strict with the implementation and dissemination of information concerning proper HIV treatment. People tend to believe claims of cure without any substantial scientific backing.

"As far as HIV is concerned in Nigeria, it remains a chronic ailment that the cure is yet to be found. Those living with the disease must take their drugs for life and that is why adherence to counselling was introduced to educate the HIV patients on the need to take the ARV drugs as long as they live," Vanguard quoted Dr. Uche Okoro of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Agency as saying.

Patients who stopped taking ARV drugs are observed to be returning to health facilities in worse condition. As a result of neglecting first-line drug treatments, more expensive second-line drugs are needed that usually scarce.

A conclusive cure for HIV/AIDS is yet to be developed by researcher and scientists, which is why Anti-Retroviral (ARV) remains to be the most potent and scientifically tested way of fighting the infection. Apart from treatment, methods of decreasing HIV transmission cases is also being developed.

As of the current writing, UNAIDS reported that there are approximately 36.7 million people worldwide living with HIV/AIDS. Moreover, in 2015 alone, 2.1 million individuals globally are becoming infected with HIV. 

In view of the given facts, health agencies worldwide are intensifying their campaign to educate the general public on the reality of HIV infection and its consequences. On a research level, fundings coming from the government and private donors are being poured to develop an absolute HIV/AIDS cure.
