New updates for "Star Wars Battlefront 2" will feature the first free DLC and the sequel's microtransactions will include loot boxes.

Electronic Arts and DICE announced during the E3 2017 event that the first DLC for "Star Wars Battlefront 2" will free to download for players in the consoles and PC platforms. The DLC will include planet Crait from the upcoming film "The Last Jedi" and "Force Awakens" characters Finn and Captain Phasma.

The characters will come with new Star Cards, which allow the player to customize their heroes and classes in "Star Wars Battlefront 2." All these cards, Common, Uncommon, Rare, and Epic can be earned through gameplay such as completing in-game quests and challenges, taking part in events and opening loot crates.

Expansions for "Star Wars Battlefront 2" will be released as “themed-seasons” with the first arriving in December and focusing on "The Last Jedi" film, which hit theaters on Dec. 15, VG 24/7 reported.

In other news, EA is planning some changes regarding the microtranstions of "Star Wars Battlefront 2.

The game publisher plans to drop the old system of large paid expansion packs and replace them with free expansions in favor of more microtransactions for players.

Microtransactions are prevalent among free-to-play and e-sport video games as a way for the developer to offer something that is not exactly essential to playing the game, but might improve their experience. Often these microtransactions are focused on extra aesthetic options of in-game characters, but in some cases can include extra abilities or characters.

For "Star Wars Battlefront 2," the expansion pack system has often been divisive, as not all players will pay for the extra content, and that can leave them behind as other gamers who do pay will likely spend their time focused on the new content.

Microtransactions can be highly profitable, so EA and DICE will not likely worry about a loss of revenue by switching to this business model and giving expansions for "Star Wars Battlefront 2" away for free, Gamerant reported.

"Star Wars Battlefront 2" will launch on Nov. 17 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC platforms.
