Despite the advancements in medical science, cataract remains one of the top causes of blindness. One of the reasons for this is the lack of proper knowledge about the eye disease.

The aforementioned eye disease is characterized by the clouding of the lens of the eye. The clarity of vision is affected, and an operation is required to resolve the condition.

According to the World Health Organization, there are many risk factors for cataract development. Apart from being an age-related disease, this eye condition can be caused by exposure to sunlight, tobacco use, alcohol drinking, and other eye-damaging activities.

Upon immersing oneself in any activities or even reaching a certain age, one may experience early signs of cataract. Since it may start out small, one may slightly experience blurry vision, but not to a blinding extent.

Moreover, being sensitive to the light of the sun or lamp is also an early sign of cataract, according to All About Vision. Such sources of light may be too glaring or bright for most people. On certain occasions, colors may not appear as bright as they use to be.

Other signs may include seeing halos around light, yellowish or fading of colors, and needing a brighter light for reading. In some cases, people suffering from cataract may also experience something known as "second sight."

Second sight is when a person experiences a temporary improvement in near vision. However, this phenomenon is part of a symptom of the developing eye condition known as a nuclear cataract.

Although knowing the signs and symptoms is very helpful for early treatment and recovery, nothing beats taking preventive measures.
