GoPro has announced a total recall of its newly released Karma drones. The company is reported to have sold 2,500 units of the device so far. GoPro stated that it has discovered that in a small number of cases, the drone may lose power during operation. The drone was released for sale in the U.S. and Europe on October 23.
GoPro released a statement saying that it will ship the updated Karma drones once the issue is fixed. The company's CEO Nicholas Woodman said, "Safety is our top priority." GoPro is collaborating with Federal Aviation Administration and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
Karma drones may be returned to the company directly or to the stores where they have been bought from. The company will issue a full refund to customers. However, currently, it is not offering any exchanges for a fixed model.
The recall is a major blow to the company as it was counting on Karma drone for its turnaround. GoPro has been facing a decline in the revenue from its core business of selling action camera. However, the company stated that the drone recall is not likely to affect its camera sales.
GoPro recently posted lower-than-expected quarter reserve. The company had laid off seven percent of its staff this year. GoPro also had some production issues as well as earlier this year, it had delayed the release of Karma drone to winter holiday time. The company did not provide any reason for the delay but ultimately released the Karma drones in the month of October.
