Mozilla has rolled out the latest update for its flagship web browser. Firefox 50.0 is now available for PCs and Android devices. The update brings a handful of new features that improves the capability of the browser.
For the desktop version, Firefox 50.0 now has WebM EME Support for Widevine on Windows and Mac platforms. This allows the browser to play video on more websites without plugins. The new version also marks an improvement in terms of performance for SDK extensions or extensions that use the SDK module loader, according to GSM Arena.
The new version of Firefox has added more download protection for more executable file types on Windows, Mac, and Linux platforms. Windows 7 and newer versions will also notice the significant availability of WebGL. The new Guarani (gn) locale is also added to the new version. There is also a new option that allows users to limit "Find in page" search to whole words only.
A handful of new keyboard shortcuts were also added as well as updates on existing ones. Users can now configure the Ctrl+Tab shortcut to cycle through tabs in recently used order, according to ZDNet. Additionally, pressing Ctrl+Alt+R will set the browser into Reader Mode. Mozilla has also added built-in Emoji set for operating systems that do not have Emoji fonts, like Windows 8.0 and lower versions, and Linux.
As for the Android platform, Firefox 50.0 brings support for HLS videos through the player overlay. The update also simplifies the user interface by combining the History and Recent Tabs panels.
Mozilla released Firefox in November 2004. Firefox was once a dominant software that could rival Microsoft's Internet Explorer in the web browser industry. However, with the explosion of the mobile industry, the browser's market share has slowly dwindled through the years. According to NetMarketShare, Firefox holds about 11 percent of the web browser market, while the dominant player, Chrome, holds 55 percent.
