Automaker Maserati has said that the company is aiming to sell its first electric car by 2020. Along with this announcement, the company unveiled its first electric car which is an EV version of the Maserati Alfieri.

The Maserati Alfieri is a two-seater concept car which the company unveiled at the Geneva motor show back in 2014, according to Engadget. Maserati said that it is working on an electric version of the car, which will be the company's first electric vehicle.

According to CNet, the Maserati Alfieri is being designed to go head-to-head with the likes of the Porsche 911, although Maserati's European general manager Peter Denton confirmed that the Alfieri will be bigger and most probably be the size of a Jaguar F-Type.

Maserati said that the gasoline-powered Alfieri would hit the market in 2019. The car, which was originally unveiled to have a V8 engine, will sport a V6. Maserati reportedly decided to use a smaller engine to meet certain environmental requirements.

The Maserati Alfieri was originally pegged for release in 2016. The car was originally thought to be the spiritual successor of the Gran Turismo coupe. However, Maserati has confirmed that the Alfieri and a new Gran Turismo model will be released alongside each other. Both cars are expected to hit the market before the end of the decade.

Maserati is yet to provide details about the car's performance or the price of the electric model. However, given Maserati's background in auto manufacturing, the motoring community's hopes are high.

Fiat, Maserati's parent company, is rather skeptical about the electric vehicle industry. In fact, Fiat chief executive officer Sergio Marchionne told Car Magazine that "I don't know how to make [Tesla's] economic model work." He later quipped that Fiat or Maserati could also achieve what Tesla has done so far.
