Drones are becoming common nowadays, a trend that can pose a potential threat. With this in mind, drone detection company DroneShield has a created a new weapon that can disable drones from a safe distance.
Called the DroneGun, the handheld rifle-style device can jam communications between a drone and its pilot. The DroneGun can take down a drone by jamming its signal. The device's maximum effective range covers up to two kilometers.
According to ZDNet, unlike most anti-drone guns which damages or sometimes completely destroys the aircraft, the DroneGun forces drones to land or even return to its starting point. The DroneGun can also track down the pilot and also has GPS-jamming capability. DroneShield uses acoustic detection technology to track drones.
Although the device weighs about 13 pounds, it is portable enough to be operated by one person. The DroneGun is also easy to use and does not require advanced technical know-how to be operated.
As of this writing, the DroneGun is not yet certified by the Federal Communications Commission. This means that the device cannot be legally operated in the United States, according to Engadget.
DroneShield, the company behind the DroneGun, is based in Delaware. The company was compelled to create the DroneGun after reports started to surface that drones rigged with explosives are being used by some terrorist factions.
DroneShield was established in January 2014. The company's board is composed of former military men and national defense experts. Aside from anti-drone technologies, DroneShield also has patents in tech areas like cellular communications and networking, mobile cyber security, and data bandwidth management.
DroneShield filed its Initial Public Offering in May and was able to raise AU$7 million. The company completed its listing application on the Australian Securities Exchange the following month.
