HP Successfully Tests new Memory-Driven Computing Technology

HP has dubbed its new creation as The Machine.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise recently confirmed that the company has successfully tested its Memory-Driving Computing architecture. The main objective of the project is to create a new technology where memory plays a more crucial part in completing certain tasks rather than raw processing power which is the case in computers today.

In a statement acquired by Fortune, HPE executive vice president Antonio Neri said, "We have achieved a major milestone with The Machine research project - one of the largest and most complex research projects in our company's history."

HP dubbed its new creation as The Machine. HP said that The Machine is just a proof-of-concept prototype, although the company did confirm that everything works as planned. To achieve this remarkable feat, HP created a set of computer nodes that share a pool of memory, photonics-based data links, and a custom software that enables everything to work.

HP said that The Machine is still in its early developmental stage and that the technology shows a lot of potential. The company said that the next step is to try and add more nodes and memory to boost The Machine's power.

In a simulation, Memory-Driven Computing system was significantly faster at running codes compared to conventional computers. HP said that it could run up to 8,000 times fast in some cases.

HP is planning to deploy this new technology to servers and other applications that require high-end computing power. HP added that the new technology could even find its way down to the Internet of Things platform, which means that it has the potential to power smart homes of the future.

According to Engadget, the biggest hurdle that HP faces right now is how to make the new technology practical. Permanent memory, which is used by Memory-Driven Computing, will not be available until 2018 or maybe even 2019. Moreover, HP will not be adopting the use of photonics until around that time as well.
