With so many companies making VR announcements, it is not surprising that Oculus VR, one of the pioneering companies to have made VR devices, plans to open and start pre-orders for its Rift head-mounted display on Jan. 6, Wednesday.

Despite of the pre-order news, the price tag of the device is not known yet. This only means that awaiting fans will not know how much the virtual reality device will sell until the preorders actually go live. While a lot of fans have said that this sounds weird, Palmer Luckey, the Oculus co-founder disagrees with them.

"It is the standard practice in the consumer electronics industry and that the price is usually announced alongside preorders. Whether be it game consoles or smartphones, they all do it the same way," According to Luckey in a post on Reddit.

If people are not taking it as a sign, they are more likely to use it as an opportunity to make a number of guesses. Both Twitter and Reddit users as well as industry observers have taken their time today to reason out a possible price. And because nobody really knows what to expect, estimates range from $350 to $800.

Oculus is planning to launch the preorders in 20 countries with more to follow. Besides, the company will not limit presales, Venture Beat reported.

Oculus co-founder Luckey also said that when the company gets exhausted in terms of all the stock it has built up for launch, then late preorder will be getting a later ship date as well.
