A patent in Korean found by a Dutch site GSMinfo indicates that LG could overtake Samsung and release a foldable screen phone.
The Samsung X has been dominating the headlines. The rumored upcoming flagship device from the Korean-based mobile firm is expected to have a foldable screen. However, another Korean-based company, LG, has submitted a patent for a foldable phone.
Both companies want to create "clamshell" phones. The Samsung X is expected to be foldable with the screen inside. However, according to the LG patent, the company plans to create a foldable smartphone with the screen outside. Thus the device would still be functional when folded and will work like a tablet.
The bezel of the folded LG phone will be super thin that it will create an illusion of borderless display.
LG's patent for a foldable phone appears to be more promising than what Samsung has to offer. LG is believed to have submitted similar patents before, leading to a conclusion that the device is years in the making.
There are rumors that LG is set to produce 100,000 foldable phones by the end of this year. The Samsung X is also expected to be released around the same time frame. If that is the case, we can look forward to a head-to-head battle between the two Korean giants this year.
