Microsoft Officially Begins Development of ‘Minecraft: Education’ Edition with Its Purchase of MinecraftEdu

"Minecraft" has become a phenomenon, especially for the younger generation, since it was officially released in 2011. The game is expanding its appeal through Microsoft and Mojang, which the company has purchased in 2014. It should include further developments with "Minecraft" as an educational program.

Just recently, Microsoft declared that the company has officially acquired "MinecraftEdu," a third-party innovated version of "Minecraft," which are now used in universities and schools since 2011. Nevertheless, no specific details about its acquisition have been unveiled up till this time.

The acquisition of "MinecraftEdu" will begin with Microsoft and Mojang developing "Minecraft: Education Edition." It takes its concepts from "MinecraftEdu," while expanding them for learning and educational purposes. "MinecraftEdu" has been utilized in around 40 countries across the world. With the new Education Edition, it will feature how "Minecraft" can be more available and efficient in a classroom setting. Below are specific features included on the educational game:

  • It will have Intensified Maps with reference points so teachers and students altogether can find their way around the software.
  • It will include a Student Portfolio feature, where students can capture pictures like their selfies to show their learning and works.
  • It will have Intensified Multigamer, where a classroom of up to 40 students can work together toward a greater world in Minecraft.
  • Personalization and login is necessary, where students can personalize the avatars and feel more involved in the game. Teachers can also determine who the players are.
  • World export and import, where students and teachers can create and save their worlds in the game.

Mojang explains that the pricing plan for"Minecraft: Education Edition" will have the software offered at a lower price, making it as affordable and accessible as possible. A one-user license can cost around $5/year.

As to the price of large-volume licenses offered to academic institutions, it should come later this year. Mojang also reiterates that those who have acquired the original "MinecraftEdu" will have a full year absolutely free subscription.
