Older people improve their brain function by drinking concentrated blueberry juice.
According to the research from the University of Exeter, older people who drink concentrated blueberry juice tend to improve their brain and cognitive function than those who don't.
In the study, 65 to 77-year-old healthy people who drank the concentrated blueberry juice have improved their blood flow to the brain, cognitive function, and working memory. In just 12 weeks after they consumed 30 ml of concentrated blueberry juice per day. Of the 26 healthy adult participants involved in the study, 14 received a placebo, while the remaining 12 were given concentrated blueberry juice which is equivalent to 230g of blueberries.
In the 12-week period before and after the trial, the healthy adults took a cognitive test. An MRI scanner monitors their brain function and measured their resting blood flow. Those who took the concentrated blueberry juice showed a significant improvement in their brain activity and function than those who only took the placebo.
The participants were advised to stick to their normal diet, those consumed vegetables and fruits more than five portions per day were excluded. Also in another research, the risk of dementia decreased when healthy adults have a high amount of fruits and vegetable intake. The cognitive function of healthy adults is preserved because of diet rich and plant-based foods.
Blueberries, on the other hand, ranked as the second popular berries in the US. It is also known to be rich in flavonoids; rich in antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, supports the nervous system, and which is likely an important component that causes the brain function to improve.
