A study suggests that taking whey protein before breakfast can prevent the development of type 2 diabetes.
Generally, whey protein is bought as a powdered product that can be made as a smoothie or a protein shake mostly used by bodybuilders. This substance is also found in cheese and milk.
According to the researchers from Newcastle University, taking whey protein before breakfast can also stop the onset of type 2 diabetes. They assess its effectivity by conducting two studies.
In their first study, twelve obese men were involved after a 30-minute rest or after the session of a light treadmill. They were given 20 grams of whey protein and placebo before eating carbohydrate-filled breakfast. The blood level of those who took the whey protein becomes controlled than those who took the placebo after breakfast.
In the second conducted study, eleven men who are suffering from type 2 diabetes were given 15 grams of whey protein. The result also shows that their blood sugar level kept controlled. The participants were also found to limit their urge to eat snacks before lunch. Both findings were presented at Diabetes UK Professional Conference.
The blood glucose increase after eating which leads to poor management in monitoring its level, this can also cause damage to cardiovascular health. Consuming a small amount of whey protein before eating can help those who are suffering type 2 diabetes to feel more satisfied after meal and can control their blood glucose level, the author of the study noted, Dr. Daniel West.
In addition, the researchers at the University of Reading also found that whey protein can decrease the risk of heart disease; it can decrease the cholesterol and blood pressure level. Those who are taking the supplement reduce the development of other cardiovascular conditions by eight percent.
