In a mere click of a button, Russia could now easily distort and hide their ship's electromagnetic portrait to make them less vulnerable to enemy torpedoes and mines, thanks to the help of supercapacitators, the Navy announced according to Izvestia.
The new system, which has already been tested on the Ivan Gren landing ship, would allow the crew to conduct degaussing of a ship in case of danger, Sputnik New reported.
Supercapacitators, which are about the size of a regular car battery, make sure that there is a continuous process of demagnetization on the ship. They have a power capacity of 100 kW/kg, can operate on extreme temperatures, and can be used on ships, aircraft, and even cars.
"In addition to its unique acoustic portrait, each ship also has an electromagnetic signature all its own. There are magnetic mines, torpedoes, and even missiles with self-homing magnetic warheads," Alexander Mozgovoy, an expert on naval armaments, said.
He also noted that new technologies are able to simplify demagnetization process. And this system continuously monitors the state of the ship's electromagnetic field.
Such technology is not new according to Mozgovoy as the United States also have a similar system integrated on their most recent Zumwalt destroyer.
Meanwhile, Russia is also developing a unique camouflage material that will make its military invisible for reconnaissance assets. The new technology will allow to impart radio-absorbing properties for any fabric without actually altering its mass and other parameters.
"In other words, it allows to make fighters dressed in ordinary uniform invisible to radar reconnaissance devices." The latest development aims to create lightweight radio-absorbing or radio-scattering materials used as means of camouflaging both military personnel and equipment.
This is, however, not the first instance that Russia has touted the ability to make people disappear. Earlier this year, Russian scientists have also developed a unique membrane that will keep out tiny harmful particles like viruses and make people invisible.
