Star Trek Transporter Now Real? German Scientists Use Laser Beams to Teleport Information

The physicists have now for the first demonstrated in an experiment that the concept of teleportation does not only persist in the world of quantum particles, but also in our classical world.

When it comes to teleportation, the first science fiction reference that comes to mind is the famous TV sand film series, Star Trek's transporter. What was once thought of as science fiction, is now a possible reality as a team of scientists from Germany has utilized special laser beams and even successfully teleported a technical language form without the transfer of energy and matter properties.

According to one of the authors of the study, Alexander Szameit of the University of Jena in Germany, what was once thought highly impossible in technical applications of science seen in sci-fi entertainment can now become a part of daily life.

The team successfully discovered a way for teleportation to become real in the near future. Szamiet says that elementary particles that includes electrons and light particles can exist in a spatially delocalized state.

In simpler terms, there is a probability that these particles can exist in multiple places at one point, simultaneously, without losing time. Also known as quantum teleportation, this has been a famous concept that has been discussed and debated among the scientific community, however, there are no real experiments carried out yet to establish this theory.

Now, for the first time in this new study, the team demonstrated that teleportation cannot only exist in quantum particles but also in the classical world and in order to provide evidence for their findings, researchers were able to use this special kind of laser beams.

According to co-author of the study, Marco Ornigotti of the University of Jena, this can be done when the physical states of elementary particles and the properties of the light beam particles are all intertwined and entangled with each other.

This would require a specific property of light and even if this can only work locally, the team discovered that this classic information was immediately teleported.

In order to apply this in real life, these new findings can be most efficient in the communications in the near future and in the far off future, this experiment can also provide a better understanding of the possibility of teleportation without travelling in regular transit such as cars, planes, trains and buses.

This new study is published in the journal Laser & Photonics Reviews.
