The Windows 10 Mobile update has been officially released for devices running on Windows Phone 8.1
Microsoft had unveiled Windows 10 Mobile in November 2015. The software upgrade was expected to release in the following months, but the Redmond giant had consistently delayed it. In the past weeks, several carrier partners of Microsoft had hinted that the Windows 10 Mobile update would be available by Mar. 17.
Windows 10 Mobile - Compatible And Incompatible Smartphones
Microsoft has now finally started seeding the Windows 10 Mobile OTA update for compatible devices running on Windows Phone 8.1. The latest software upgrade brings plenty of new innovative features such as Microsoft Edge internet browser, Cortana voice-assistant, improved Windows Store, Continuum and numerous enhancements.
According to Microsoft, the below mentioned devices running on Windows Phone 8.1 will be able to receive Windows 10 Mobile OTA update from today:
Microsoft has stated that several devices may not receive Windows 10 Mobile update successfully without impacting the customer experience. The list does not include some of the well-known smartphones like Lumia 1020, 920, 630 and 530, MS Power User reported. These devices are likely to be included in the second line of Windows Phone 8.1 devices that are to receive Windows 10 Mobile update. Also, the Redmond giant has not released the Windows 10 upgrade for Windows RT tablets.
Upgrading to Windows 10 Mobile From Windows Phone 8.1
To install Windows 10 Mobile OTA update on a Windows Phone 8.1 device, users are required to install the 'Upgrade Advisor' app from the Windows Store. This app can be used to confirm whether the Windows 10 Mobile update is available for a particular smartphone.
After launching the app, users are required to select 'Enable Windows 10 upgrade.' The next step will allow users to perform a temporary backup of their files on desired locations such as memory card, OneDrive cloud storage or on a personalized location.
After the backup is done, users need to go to Settings > Phone update and download the Windows 10 Mobile update. Once the update is downloaded, users can install it and restore the backed up files.
