Fitbit chief executive officer James Park recently issued a statement pointing out that the lack of features on its series of smart wearable devices is not entirely a bad thing. Park also lambastes the Apple Watch, citing that the biggest con the Apple's flagship smartwatch has it its overwhelming number of features.
In an interview with The New York Times, Park said, "We look at it from a consumer point of view. Apple Watch is a computing platform, but that's really the wrong way to approach this category from the very beginning."
Since the release of the Apple Watch which is little over a year ago, the smartwatch turned out to be a key player in the fledgling but still growing smartwatch market. The Apple Watch has generated greater interests compared to some of its contemporaries from tech giants like Motorola, Samsung, and LG. Even traditional watchmakers like Tag Heuer decided to dip their toes in the smartwatch market, only to have their devices be overshadowed by the popularity of the Apple Watch.
Park said that it took a different route in developing its line of devices and did not follow the footsteps laid by Apple. Fitbit started out with a simple product in its hopes of making it consumer friendly, and then added more and more features as the time goes by.
On the other hand, Apple started developing the Apple Watch by throwing in numerous features and capabilities, which, according to Park, made the device more complicated.
Park said, "I think one of the general knocks against smartwatches is that people still don't know what they're good for, so they've crammed everything in it."
In terms of sales output, research firm IDC reported that Fitbit was able to ship 8.1 million devices during the fourth quarter of 2015. Over the same period, IDC reported that Apple shipped 4.1 million units.
According to CNet, many tech analysts claim that Fitbit's strategy is to keep its devices simple while constantly adding features into it. One prime example is when Apple iPhone 4S started supporting wireless accessories through Bluetooth connectivity. In order to take advantage of this new feature, Fitbit added Bluetooth connectivity to its devices.
