In an event held earlier this week, Google unveiled its newest products which include its flagship smartphones (Pixel and the Pixel XL), a VR Headset, and some home improvement products like Google Home and Google Wi-Fi.
The star of the event was certainly the Pixel phones. These are the first smartphone made completely by Google.
Google is most certainly looking to compete head-to-head with the Apple iPhone 7 with its Pixel phones.
Google's Pixel smartphone will be available in two variants - a 5-inch Pixel for $649 and a bigger 5.5-inch Pixel XL that will retail for $769 in the US. The prices of both the products are as same as that of the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus. The devices boast of 4GB of RAM, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor, a fingerprint sensor, and a 12MP rear-facing camera.
In a conversation with the Sydney Morning Herald, Google Vice President Jason Bremner said, "Nexus was the best of Android [the Google operating system]; Pixel is the best of Google." While most consumers would probably not appreciate that subtle differentiation, the intent is clearly to make the Pixels much more than a "pure Android" phone.
The Pixel phones will be shipped with the newly-released Android 7.1 Nougat operating system. It will come with Google's AI Assistant.
