A woman in Pennsylvania has been accused of starving her 11-month-old son after admitting that she was practicing an extreme form of veganism. The mother apparently fed her baby with just nuts and berries.

Elizabeth Hawk of Fayette County has been charged with endangering her child's welfare after investigators concluded that she failed to give her infant son enough food to survive.

During a television interview, Hawk's sister-in-law expressed concern over her nephew, who was showing some underdevelopment in motor skills and other unusual health issues.

Brandy Hawk revealed that the baby suffered from a severe rash and disturbing physical limitations such as not being able to use his hands at all. Brandy also said that her sister-in-law holds extreme beliefs in health and nutrition.

At first, Elizabeth Hawk claimed about the infant was suffering from minor allergies. However, the baby's father, who was estranged from the mother, was unconvinced and ultimately decided to take the child to state welfare officials.

According to court records, the baby's attending physician said that Hawk's failure to treat this rash is not considered inhumane. However, doctors say that this kind of skin condition can place the boy at risk of further septic shock.

Court records also reveal that the baby was experiencing delayed motor skills development due to malnutrition and this extreme vegan diet.

The infant is now in his father's custody along with the couple's two children. Brandy Hawk claims that the baby's condition is improving.
