Apple has introduced a lot of changes with the new MacBook Pro, but one that surprised its long time users is the absence of the classic startup chime.

For long-time Mac users, the Mac startup chime is a familiar and comforting sound. But Apple has decided to replace it with the sound of silence by removing it from the new MacBook Pro. The Mac startup chime is a short single note chord played when a MacBook is turned on. The sound indicates that the system has finished running the initial diagnostics and that users are good to go.

The absence of the Mac startup chime was first observed by Pingie. While browsing through some tech notes for the new MacBook Pro, they also discovered that one key instruction was absent from the process of resetting the NVRAM. Long term users know that they would hear two start up chimes before the reset, but Apple removed that instruction too.

Based on user reviews, the new MacBook Pro automatically turns on when opened. Gizmodo reported that the removal of the Mac startup chime could be done to prevent unintended interruption by opening the computer.

But by removing the classic Mac startup chime, Apple is letting its users move into a world where MacBook's function like iPhone's and iPad's - always ready to go.

Despite the changes done to the Mac startup chime over the years, there was never really a time when it was removed - until now. Macs have been chiming for so long time that for some Mac users, the removal of the Mac startup chime marks the end of an era.
