Volunteers say that the Calais Jungle has turned into 'The Lord of the Flies.' (YouTube)
Volunteers from several charities have compared the Calais Jungle to the "Lord of the Flies" as unsupervised children are left to survive in dangerous conditions.
A small group of volunteers from three small charities namely Calais Kitchens, Refugee Community Kitchens, and Little Ashram Kitchen reported that more than a thousand children--mostly boys between the ages 10 and 17--are left to roam around the Calais Jungle and sleep in bare containers. The volunteers told The Independent that they were there to provide food, bottled water, and blankets to the children "round the clock."

The volunteers reported that only 20 passes were given to permit access to the Calais Jungle, and only French officials have access to the restricted container sites. This poses a huge concern because the officials are not present on a daily basis to provide the children with their basic needs.
Volunteer Steve Bedlam said that the water supply has been turned off except for the toilets, and only one hot meal was provided each day. He added that "They've just left these 1,500 kids [unsupported] since Friday and gone."
Previously, The Guardian reported that the UK Government promised to provide sanctuary to the children, but little has happened since then.
In fact, Cecelia Bittner, a volunteer from Calais Kitchen said that the situation attests to the fact that there is a lack of government presence surrounding the situation. She held that "If you want to know where the government presence is, it is giant vehicles and machines destroying the jungle all around the [children]."
