Meet the robot-making pizza at Zume. (YouTube)
California-based restaurant Zume Pizza employs robots to create pizzas.
Customers can order online through the company's website or application. The procedure commences with a human employer placing the dough onto the conveyor belt followed by the participation of robots named Pepe, Giorgio, and Marta, who squirt and spread the tomato sauce all over the base. The next human will continue the process by covering the dough with toppings. An ABB robot will pick up the product and bake it in an 800-degree oven.

This kind of robots are usually used in factories for pallet-stacking. Apart from making pizzas, the robotics also have optical sensors and cameras that can monitor the progress as well as the size, thickness, and speed of the procedure. When used in maximum capacity, a production of 5,000 pizzas daily can be achieved.
These pizza-making robots also play a role in delivering orders. The restaurant uses a self-cleaning cutter that slices the product evenly prior its delivery.
Although the establishment recognizes the need for AI machines to achieve efficiency in its services, co-founder and co-chief executive Julian Collins said that food companies "will always need human beings when making food and serving it to people." The use of robots is for "task replacement as opposed to occupation replacement."
Collins added that "food has to be made with love" making humans an important part of the process.
Employing robots is a way of eliminating low-skilled jobs in industries. This will also lead to the establishment of more technical jobs like machine maintenance. In fact, Zume restaurant has started providing technical training to all of its workers.
