Twitter announced the suspension of several accounts associated with the alt-right movement, a white supremacist group. The accounts were suspended on Tuesday. The micro-blogging site announced a series of measures to counter cyberbullying, abuse and hate speech on its platform.
The alt-right is a loosely organized group that advocates white nationalism. Its main leader Richard Spencer's account is among the many which have been suspended by Twitter. Spencer is believed to have said that he wants blacks, Asians, Hispanics and Jews removed from the U.S. Apart from his personal verified account, his think tank's and online magazine's account were also suspended.

Twitter has also suspended accounts related to Pax Dickinson, John Rivers, Ricky Vaughn and Paul Town. Twitter refused to comment on the suspension citing security and privacy concerns. However, Spencer said, "There is a great purge going on and they are purging people based on their views." He also labeled the suspension as 'corporate Stalinism.'
Twitter had earlier taken action against an alt-right member and Breitbart editor Milo Yiannopoulos. His account was suspended in July this year. He was found to have carried out a campaign of bullying and abuse against Ghostbusters actress Leslie Jones.
Twitter is under severe pressure to contain the use of its platform for the purpose of spreading hatred and abuse. The company has introduced a slew of tools to aid its users in creating a safe environment. It has introduced a tool to report tweets which target people based on their gender, religious affiliation, disability, age, race, ethnicity and so on. It has also introduced a 'mute' feature for combating online abuse.
