FacioMetrics was founded in 2015. It develops technology which uses artificial intelligence for the purpose of analyzing facial images. Its technologies may be integrated with apps designed for mobiles. FacioMetrics can provide real-time data by analyzing a picture through the frame of a camera.

The startup founder and chief executive Fernando De la Torre said that such technology might be used for a variety of purposes including augmented reality, virtual reality, measuring audience reaction and animation.

The acquisition adds to a string of deals Facebook has entered into to enhance its position against competitors such as Snapchat. FacioMetrics' tools will let Facebook add fun features to Instagram.

"We're excited to welcome the FacioMetrics team, who will help bring more fun effects to photos and videos and build even more engaging sharing experiences on Facebook," Facebook said. While the technology is primarily meant to be used by Facebook for videos and pictures on its platform, it is likely that it may also be used to provide superior virtual experience.

Facebook recently demoed a new feature which allows users to apply Prisma-like art filters on their videos and pictures in real-time. The company bought another facial recognition technology firm MSQRD in April this year.
