LinkedIn, which headquartered in the US, has approximately si million registered users in Russia. It is the first major professional social networking website to be blocked by the Russian authorities, setting a point of reference for the way international Internet companies should operate in the country.
The site will be inaccessible to the Russian nationals in the country, Roskomnadzor representative Vadim Ampelonsky said. All the major Internet service providers in Russia like Rostelcom, MTS, and Vimpelco have reportedly blocked access to LinkedIn.
The Kremlin said that the choice was lawful and that President Vladimir Putin did not plan to meddle in the situation.
When asked whether the move could trigger fears of online control and censorship, Kremlin representative Dmitry Peskov said there were no such concerns.
"Roskomnadzor's action to block LinkedIn denies access to the millions of members we have in Russia and the companies that use LinkedIn to grow their businesses," the spokeswoman said.
According to Reuters, Roskomnadzor's Ampelonsky said the watchdog received a letter from the LinkedIn's US administration on Friday asking for a meeting to resolve the issue.
He said he anticipated that the meeting would occur within two weeks, but that Roskomnadzor had first to get a notice of approval for the meeting from its foreign ministry and security services in light of the fact that LinkedIn is a foreign organization.
LinkedIn representative have said the company is ready to go ahead with the meeting and explain the issues.
