Spotify is to offer its free users more on-demand access as part of a service called "Jump In." (YouTube)
Spotify is giving its non-paying users more on-demand songs with a new feature called "Jump In."
Spotify free users are limited to a shuffle-only music experience, but the company is looking to test a new feature called "Jump In" for those who cannot spare extra cash on a premium a more "on-demand" experience. Though certain on-demand features may not be as extensive as those under a premium plan, it will give free users a chance to choose what songs they want to listen to on certain playlists.

While Spotify plans to test the "Jump In" feature, it still has to negotiate with a lot of music labels and music publishers. Tech Radar reported that getting music publishers to agree is a challenge since they would much prefer not to have a free tier since they do not get paid a big amount for it.
Meanwhile, according to The Verge, no deals are currently in place, and those deals might not come any time soon. This means that Spotify might have to delay the release of the "Jump In" feature, or would negotiate for a special consent. Since everything is still under negotiations, there is a chance for the company to scrape off the idea of implementing the feature. Of course, that would depend on the results of all the negotiations.
Spotify is trying to up its game because even though it is considered the most popular music streaming app, it needs a new leverage to compete with its budding competitors. Apple Music currently has about 20 million subscribers. Although it may not be half of Spotify's subscribers, Apple managed to gain those subscribers in a short period.
Other than Apple Music, Spotify will also have to compete with the promising features of the new Pandora Premium. Pandora Media has announced that it would give users a more personalized music-streaming experience.
