Facebook's Oculus now has a vacant position as its CEO Brendan Iribe has announced that he is stepping down. Iribe cofounded Oculus with Palmer Luckey in 2012. He will assume a new position, heading one of the two newly created divisions of Oculus.
Oculus has announced that it is dividing its operations into two divisions; a mobile and PC virtual reality unit. Iribe will head the PC group, which will focus on Oculus Rift as well as on research and computer vision. The mobile group will be headed by Jon Thomason, who joined Oculus earlier this year.

"We'll continue investing deeply in research and development in computer vision, displays, optics, graphics, audio, input and more to create the breakthroughs that will unlock new form factors and experiences," Iribe said.
Oculus co-founder Palmer Luckey received a backlash when it was revealed that he had paid $10,000 to Nimble America, a pro-Donald Trump political organization. Luckey has kept a low profile since then. However, according to a statement released by Oculus spokesperson, Luckey is still with Oculus and is likely to be given a new role as well.
The reshuffling points to the long-term vision of Facebook for Oculus. Iribe said that Facebook intends to focus on VR in the future and is looking to build an advanced computing platform to bring new experiences to its users. Facebook has its own dedicated social virtual reality division.
Oculus started dispatching its highly anticipated VR headset in March this year. The headset has received mainly positive reviews. With its $599 price tag, the device occupies the higher end of the market, along with the likes of HTC Vive and PlayStation VR headset.
The company is now believed to be working towards developing a standalone VR headset. Unlike its current offering, the new device will not be required to be tethered to a console or a PC.
