Facebook has announced that it would not support any attempts by US President-elect Donald Trump's administration to create a Muslim registry.
After several days of refusing to comment on whether or not it would support Trump's plans to build a Muslim registry, Facebook has finally declared its stance.

In an e-mail to a Buzzfeed reporter named Nitasha Niku, a Facebook spokesperson described Trump as a "straw-man." Mashable also quoted the spokesperson saying "No one has asked us to build a Muslim registry, and of course we would not do so."
Aside from Facebook, other companies including Pandora, Slack, Giphy, Google, Twitter, GitHub, and the Electronic Frontier Foundation have also announced that they are unwilling to assist Trump's administration in creating a Muslim registry. Their stance was revealed after a group of 22 advocacy organizations released letters requesting these major technology companies to decline to support the move.
Despite the refusal of many technology companies, Buzzfeed reported that Trump could still build a Muslim registry. Since his campaign, Trump has remained firm on his plan to restrict Muslim immigration. While he has backpedaled on totally restricting Muslims from entering the US, the idea of such registry was a still a major part of his platform. Trump has expressed his desire to reinstate the National Security Entry-Exit Registration System (NSEERS), which is used to store a database of immigrants from countries that have a Muslim majority.
Although Facebook and other social media companies do not intend to create such a database for Trump's administration to use, information available on the platform have been exploited by advertisers and data brokers who use the data to target particular groups of people.
