Cyanogen Inc, a venture-funded company, has announced that it will discontinue its services on December 31, 2016. The Cyanogen-supported nightly builds will also be discontinued.
"As part of the ongoing consolidation of Cyanogen, all services, and Cyanogen-supported nightly builds will be discontinued no later than 12/31/16. The open source project and source code will remain available for anyone who wants to build CyanogenMod personally," a statement from Cyanogen said.

According to this announcement, users of the devices which run on Cyanogen OS, such as the OnePlus One or Lenovo Zuk Z1, will not receive further software updates. However, the source code will remain and can still be used by the developers of the abandoned community.
CyanogenMod is an open-source operating system built for smartphones and tablets. It is based on the Android platform. Historically, CyanogenMod has been a community-developed project with tons of people contributing to developing its code. These developers were somewhat thrown out when a crew of top developers formed the venture-backed company and declined to establish a profit-sharing agreement for the major contributors whose work was an integral part of the program. This has been one of the many controversies involving Cyanogen. Another is related to the removal of the co-founder of the company, Steve Kondik.
Kondik was allegedly removed as part of a managerial reorganization last October. The new CEO Lior Tal announced that the company would be consolidated into a single Palo Alto-based team and that the headquarters at Seattle will be dissolved.
With the Cyanogen OS ceasing to exist, the company has started working on Apps instead. Cyanogen Inc. has launched the Mod platform, a program for building future-ready devices.
