The Japanese government, on Monday, announced a finalized plan to establish 30,000 Wi-Fi access points around the nation in time for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics.
In 2015, Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry sought to provide connectivity to the victims of potential disasters and tourists by installing Wi-Fi in public facilities such as schools, museums, government buildings, and cultural heritage sites, including historical ruins.

A total of 14,000 facilities have already been equipped with Wi-Fi, leaving 16,000 more, Japan Times reported.
According to 2015 data from the ministry, while 86 percent of Japan's major airports have been equipped with Wi-Fi, only 32 percent of the major railway system in the country and merely four percent of the country's public bus system have Wi-Fi. Other tourist places lack connectivity too. For instance, only 26 percent of visitor centers in national parks and 11 percent of museums having hot spots.
According to a survey by the Japan's education ministry, schools are also lagging in connectivity. As of March, only 26.1 percent of elementary and junior high schools in the country had Wi-Fi. According to the non-Japanese visitors surveyed by the ministry, 32.7 percent said Japan is behind on Wi-Fi availability.
According to Go Katsuhata, a ministry official in charge of local internet access, the original plan was to cover 29,000 spots, but an extra 1,000 facilities were added after negotiations with municipal governments nationwide. He stressed on disaster prevention as the main aim of the government in setting up public Wi-Fi connection but added that the connectivity can be used for many other purposes too including schools and tourist centers.
