The training program, in partnership with FICCI, comprises of 90 training videos and an eight-hour classroom training program. Over the next three years, Google will hold 5,000 training workshops across 40 Indian cities.
"When I was growing up in Chennai information was scarce. But now that has changed, thanks to the Internet," remarked Sundar Pichai at the event. Working on the belief that the internet is a powerful equalizer, Pichai said that Google's aim is to bring the benefits of information and technology to as many people as possible by investing in open ecosystems.
India's Information and Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, who was also present at the Google event, urged Google to also look into the issues of cyber-security.
To be part the program, SMEs will need to register on the Digital Unlocked website. They will be able to access all the information on an app as well, called Primer, which is available on iOS and Android, in Hindi and English. Tamil, Telugu, and Marathi versions are also being developed. The free app that also works offline will allow businesses to try out basic and advanced courses.
Another initiative from the tech giant is GoogleMyBusiness which will ensure SMEs are listed on Google, even if they do not have their websites. Google said that 40,000 SMEs are currently listed on its search engine. It will also help businesses to create their mobile-ready website, using the data in the listing.
