One user expressed his frustration stating that the mishap is "not cool." It appears that the problem even extended to the account of the new First Lady. Some users claim that they found themselves following @FLOTUS.
Twitter has been quick to address this issue stating that it was a glitch. Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey owned up to his mistake saying "we apologize, no excuses."
Dorsey reiterated that the whole mess was "a mistake" and that "it wasn't right." According to Tech Radar, about 560,000 people were affected by the mishap.
An inside source stated that the problem is rooted from the transition of the POTUS Twitter handle.
Twitter apparently decided to automatically add the followers of the @POTUS44 account to the new @POTUS account. This resulted in users following the new POTUS by default.
