According to a blog post made by Partnership on AI, Apple will be inducted as a founding member. The blog says, "Diversity of thought across the organization is crucial to ensure that we effectively explore and address the influences of AI on people and society, provide guidance on AI best practices, and seek to advance the public's understanding of AI."
The group was initially formed in September last year. The main goal is to keep a tab on AI development. The members will have the task of establishing best practices. It will also release open domain research papers. The group also stated that Apple had been collaborating with the members from the onset. However, now its participation has been made formal.
Apple will have its head of advanced development of Siri, Tom Gruber, as its representative on the board. The Group also announced the constitution of its first board. The board counts Dario Amodei of OpenAi, the Elon Musk-backed research group, and Carol Rose of the American Civil Liberties Union as its members.
The Group stated that it would hold its first board meeting on February 3 in San Francisco. It is also expected to provide more details about its upcoming projects in the near future.
Apple had its first brush with Siri in 2011. However, the company faced strong competition from Google and Amazon, among others. The group membership is seen by some as a change of course for Apple as the company is known for keeping its development work under strict secrecy.
