BlackBerry is suing Nokia over a patent infringement on several mobile networking technologies. Interestingly, the claim has nothing to do with physical mobile phones.

BlackBerry claims that at least 11 patent were deliberately infringed by the Finnish brand Nokia. One prominent patent is the number of transmit antennas in a base station.

Despite the fact that BlackBerry is suing Nokia, the former is not clearly interested in stopping its rival Nokia from using the patent but is demanding royalties and pay for damages caused by the patent infringement.

"On information and belief, Nokia's infringement has been, and continues to be, willful and deliberate, and has caused substantial damage to BlackBerry. In spite of Nokia's knowledge of the '829 patent, Nokia has continued making, using, offering for sale/lease, and/or selling or leasing in the United States, and/or importing into the United States, the Infringing Products that are compliant with the UMTS/UTRAN Standards, without a license from BlackBerry. Nokia's egregious infringement behavior warrants an award of enhanced damages," the case file reads.

Apparently, the long-standing rift between the two brands has not subsided. In 2012, Nokia sued BlackBerry for a similar issue and asked for the brand to be banned in the United States. The case is currently being resolved in the US District Court of Delaware.

BlackBerry has ceased manufacturing phones and is now creating software for mobile phones.
