Asteroids colliding with planet Earth is one of the highly predicted doomsday scenarios. Despite the sophisticated technology that we possess today, the future of mankind remains uncertain.

Recently, astronomers at the Catalina Sky Survey in Arizona spotted a 10-foot-wide space rock passed by the Earth. The incident was considered a relatively close call, diving in closer as much as 9,000 miles away from our planet's atmosphere. To have a feel of how close the encounter is, the distance of our moon is about 239,000 miles from Earth.

A study conducted by the University of Southampton revealed that the mere penetration of an asteroid towards the Earth's atmosphere is more than enough to cause doomsday scenario. Three percent of the population will die from the impact of the asteroid hitting Earth, according to Express.

Before the collision, the Earth will quickly heat up, forcing strong winds and huge tornadoes. If by chance the said space rock explodes before hitting the surface, the air burst could wipe out 15 percent of the planet's population.

Moreover, survivors of the initial encounter would not be safe from the impact itself. The collision would generate pressure waves so strong that it could rupture the internal body parts of individuals.

The question of humankind's survival hugely lies on the planet's preparedness for such doomsday scenario. Despite the known preparations, a collision cannot be ruled out early on, according to NASA.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump's administration may cause some concerns for NASA. The current White House administration has expressed its inclination to cut the space agency's funding, therefore, limiting NASA's scope of activity, including watching over potential asteroids heading the towards the Earth's orbit.
