As of February 2017, Sony was able to reportedly sell 900,000 thousand VR headsets. As the company planning to compete with its rivals, Sony is on the verge of offering the PSVR into an arcade setting.
According to a post from PlayStation Lifestyle, Sony is sighting on bringing PSVR on not only arcades but family theme parks as well. Due to the slow adoption of the VR unit in its consumer market, the initiative might possibly be realized first in Japan.
A team that will be working on bringing PSVR on different markets has been reportedly formed by Sony. The said expansion is aiming to entice consumers on trying the VR headset before they would eventually invest on it.
Furthermore, the Japanese group's video game arm has firstly announced such initiative in March. Sources close to the Sony stated that a "Team" will be leading the VR initiative as well as find potential partners in the industry.
The PSVR has been introduced in October. Since then, it has reportedly become the most popular VR headset for homes, which is backed up by the statistics coming from a research firm named IHS Markit. Despite that, the firm believes that customers remain still unaware about the aforementioned technology.
Sony's direction of selling the PSVR to commercial owners will possibly offer a big help in the long run. With the company's new initiative, individuals can gain a new perspective on how VR works especially those individuals who are not familiar with VR.
Reports claim that Sony's music arm in Japan has signed a partnership with Tokyo-based Hashilus already. The said company specializes in VR technology and brings entertainment content at public places. Moreover, Hashilus has been known to bring VR to landmark buildings, theme parks and museums. The same business approach to consumers have been also pursued by Sony's VR competitors. The HTC Vive and Oculus Rift have already featured VR tours in theme parks for consumers.
