The American Cancer Society has revealed that men have more chance of developing oral cancer than women. However, regardless of gender, every person should know the common signs of oral cancer.

Early detection is one of the best ways to beat cancer. That is why one should always be cautious of sudden any changes or abnormalities that he or she may experience. In the case of oral cancer, a simple toothache or cold may serve as a hint of the said disease, according to Journal and Courier Online

When the normal functioning of the oral cavity and pharynx are disrupted, it may indicate the development of cancer. Irritation, lump or thick patch in the mouth or lips and throat could also signal the disease. A check-up may be needed to determine the reason behind these symptoms.

Other symptoms of oral cancer include but are not limited to a white or red patch in the mouth, feeling that something is caught in the throat, difficulty chewing, swallowing, or moving the jaw and tongue, numbness in the tongue or other areas of the mouth, and even pain in one ear without hearing loss. If an individual experience these symptoms for more than two weeks, he or she should see a doctor immediately.

A person suffering from these symptoms should then undergo an oral cancer examination to detect potential signs of cancer. The procedure is painless and normally takes only a few minutes. One should expect a thorough examination on the face, neck, lips, tongue, mouth, and the back of the throat.

Remember that prevention would always be better than cure.
