Samsung is poised to overtake Intel in terms of sales in the chip industry. Such a major change in the ranking will likely be heralded by increasing demands for memory chips.
Over the past decades, Intel has dominated and is considered as the world's largest chipmaker. Since 1993, the company has held on to this title.

However, things might change this year, according to US semiconductor market research firm IC Insights. The research firm believes that Intel could be displaced by Samsung from the top position.
"If memory market prices continue to hold or increase through the second quarter and the balance of this year, Samsung could charge into the top spot and displace Intel," PC Mag quoted President of the US research firm IC Insights Bill McClean saying.
Based on the firm's projection, Intel is expected to have a sales of $14.4 billion in the second quarter of 2017. Although this may sound like a huge amount, in the competitive world of the chip manufacturing industry, it would come second to Samsung's projected $14.6 billion sales.
The potential rise of Samsung to become the world's largest chipmaker has been attributed to the company's dominance in the memory chip department. Memory chips are a necessary to deliver the best high-end smartphone devices, and Samsung has been winning on this front.
The first reason is that the Korean-based company sells more chips than Intel. Secondly, its demand and selling point is much higher.
However, Intel has something new to offer this year. The company will be introducing a new generation of processors. With changes in the company's marketing and technical approach, the possibility that it will be more successful this year remains high.
