The Surface Laptop and Surface Book might be similar products, but they serve different audiences. Here is a comparison of the specs, features, and prices of both devices.

Software

The Surface Laptop comes with the new latest of Windows 10, the Windows 10 S. The new OS is faster and virus-proof, but it has some limitations. Users are only allowed to install apps available on the Windows Store.

On the other hand, the Surface Book offers more freedom since it uses Windows 10 Pro which supports third-party apps.

Displays

The two devices have resolutions between 1080p and 4K, though the Surface Book is closer with a 3000x2000 screen. The difference may not be obvious, but the Surface Laptop has a Gorilla Glass 3 panel which is resistant to damage. It is also thinner and slightly taller than the Surface Book.

CPU, GPU

The two have i5 and i7 processors. But the Surface Laptop has the latest seventh-gen Kaby Lake configuration compared to the sixth-gen Skylake. The Surface Book offers comparable configurations with dedicated GPUs, while the Surface Laptop exclusively supports integrated solutions.

Battery Life, Storage, and RAM

The Surface Book lasts for about 12 hours, while the Surface Laptop can perform for up to 14 hours. The two devices support 16GB RAM, but the Surface Laptop is the only one with a 4GB tier. When it comes to storage, they have same capacities from 128GB to 1TB, although the 1TB option for Surface Laptop is not yet available at the moment.

Unique Features

The Surface Laptop is a standard laptop similar to Apple's MacBook and MacBook Pro. The Surface Book is a 2-in1 PC; it has a keyboard that can be detached or folded to use the device as a tablet. While the Surface Book is versatile, the Surface Laptop is familiar. 

Pricing

The Surface Laptop with an i5 processor, 4GB/8GB RAM and 128GB/256GB storage cost $999 and $1,299 respectively. The Surface Book with an i5 processor, on the other hand, has four models with increasing storage, NVIDIA GPU, and the price starts at $1,499 to $1,999.

Meanwhile, the Surface Laptop with an i7 processor, 8GB/16GB RAM and 256GB/512GB storage costs $1,599 and $2,199 respectively. The Surface Book with an i7 Processor, 8GB RAM/256GB storage and upgraded GPUs range from $2,099 to $2,399.

Which Should You Buy?

The major differences between the two the GPU, software, and price. If you want additional apps outside the Windows Store, the Surface Book is for you. Additionally, the Surface Book may also be a great product for graphic artists and gamers because of GPU options.

If you think that a 2-in1 PC is handy for you, then Surface Book if a good choice. But if you want to use a standard Laptop, the Surface Laptops is recommended.

The Surface Laptop is available for pre-order with shipments starting on June 15, but the Surface Book is on the market already.
