A new study found that magic mushrooms appear to be the safest drug when it comes to recreational drug use.
Of the estimated 10,000 people who reported of taking magic mushrooms, which contain naturally occurring and hallucinogenic alkaloid psilocybin, only 0.2 percent reported that they needed emergency medical treatment, according to the 2017 Global Drug Survey.

To compare, rates of emergency medical treatment for MDMA, LSD, alcohol, and cocaine were nearly five times higher than mushrooms, and weed-related emergency cases were also three times higher. Of note, the survey included about 120,000 participants from 50 countries.
"Magic mushrooms are one of the safest drugs in the world," Adam Winstock, a consultant addiction psychiatrist and founder of the Global Drug Survey, said. However, he noted that knowledge on the proper type of mushroom and dosing technique is necessary as these could pose risk and cause panic attacks or confusion.
"Death from toxicity is almost unheard of with poisoning with more dangerous fungi being a much greater risk in terms of serious harms," Winstock said.
A tourist recently died after jumping from a fifth-floor balcony after consuming orange juice laced with magic mushrooms.
"Combined use with alcohol and use within risky and unfamiliar settings increase the risks of harm most commonly accidental injury, panic and short-lived confusion, disorientation, and fears of losing one's mind."
Meanwhile, past several studies suggested that psilocybin mushrooms have therapeutic value for treating people suffering from addiction, anxiety, depression, PTSD, and other mental health disorders. Often, they are administered with just one does and used when other treatment options have failed.
The annual Global Drug Survey is conducted by an independent research group from London, which aims to spread drug education and awareness across the globe, despite legal status. You can click here to view the full report.
