Researchers at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University (LKSOM) have identified extra-virgin olive oil as a specific ingredient responsible in protecting the human body from cognitive decline. The said ingredient is found mainly in the Mediterranean diet, which is associated with a variety of health benefits.
The said study was headed by Domenico Praticò, MD, Professor in the Departments of Pharmacology and Microbiology and the Center for Translational Medicine at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University. By using mice as their subject, they managed to observe how the brain cells of the mice react to diets enriched with extra-virgin olive oil.
"This is an exciting finding for us. Thanks to the autophagy activation, memory, and synaptic integrity were preserved, and the pathological effects in animals otherwise destined to develop Alzheimer's disease were significantly reduced. This is a very important discovery since we suspect that a reduction in autophagy marks the beginning of Alzheimer's disease," Science Daily quoted Dr. Praticò as saying.
The research conducted revealed that dramatic differences in nerve cell appearance and function. Therefore, making olive oil as a promising ingredient not simply for diet, but most especially with medications affecting cognitive decline.
