3Doodler Start is the newest version of the 3D printing pen from the startup company that began as a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign. The streamlined version 2.0 for kids is an upgrade of the original drawing pen that is curvier, colorful, and safer for children.

Each 3Doodler pen includes a starter pack with plastic strands. Users of the 3D printing pen just have to install a strand, switch it on, and then make original artwork or close reproductions.

The artist using the pen is the "3D printer" while the human brain is the software to turn ideas into real artwork, according to Engadget.

3Doodler Start will cost parents and schools $50 each or $40 for pre-orders. The price tag is half the cost of 3Doodler 2.0 launched about one year ago.

This price difference is due to many cost-reducing steps the designers took. For example, there is one slow writing speed.

There is also only one temperature setting. However, this boosts the device's safety as it prevents the plastic writing tip from burning a person or object.

This is a big plus compared to the device's first versions. In fact, people can even write on their skin using the child-friendly plastic.

The unit includes a plastic filament that melts at low temperatures. This differs from the original 3Doodler that included extruding hot plastic.

One big advantage 3Doodler Start has over rival models is that it is battery-powered and totally wireless, according to Pocket-Lint. So there are no power cables to deal with.

Another key benefit of 3Doodler Start is that it uses a MicroUSB port for a 1-2 hour full charge, which eliminates the need to carry around a bulky charger. Start lasts up to one hour on a single charge.

There are also free online projects for kids including a 3D coloring book. Different packs to add Doodleblocks or extra plastics will also be available.

The first Start units are scheduled to ship in May. It will be just in time to keep children busy improving their artistic skills during summer vacation.

Inventors of the original 3Doodler built a prototype in early 2012. They launched a Kickstarter campaign in February 2013 with a $30,000 goal.
