A Samsung-spun startup company's new smart shoe from the conglomerate's C-Lab innovation program was teased about a week before the start of this year's Mobile World Congress (MWC) tech exhibition in Barcelona, Spain. Salted Venture's IOFIT sneakers contain sensors that collect information from different parts of the foot and stream it to a smartphone app. This allows athletes and coaches to access data on the performance of the wearer, such as the balance and posture of a golf swing.

IOFIT will officially be introduced at MWC 2016 starting on February 22, Monday. Sensor-collected data can help to provide information about factors such as center of gravity, balance, and weight shift, according to VentureBeat.

The athletic shoes then stream the data to a smartphone or tablet app. Meanwhile, a video-recording feature can sync a mobile device's footage with data from IOFIT.

At least two models will be launched. They include one mainly for strength workouts, and a second pair that looks like an Oxford shoe for golfing, according to The Verge.

Salted Venture claims its smart sneakers are unique. The reason is they are not only designed for runners but also other fitness fans, and golfers.

For example, the startup company explains foot placement is important for a golf swing so its new shoes could be helpful. It shared in a statement that ideas and feedback were collected from pro golfers and personal trainers to build the IOFIT smart shoes.

Jacob Cho is Salted Venture's CEO. He noted that balance is a key factor of fitness workouts and golf swings, and without it the result is a greater risk of injury and wasted energy.

Last year Lenovo showcased smart shoes with a screen that shows the wearer's mood. It is another sign of how greatly the Internet of Things (IoT) is changing the world.

A Salted Venture spokesperson told VentureBeat that its smart shoes will be available for pre-orders in July or August this year, including fitness ($149) and golf ($199) versions. It might also team up with third-party brands like Nike or Adidas.

WMC is often referred to as the Consumer Electronic Show (CES) of Europe. Last month at CES Samsung introduced a wide variety of products including large video walls and smart refrigerators.
