Virtual reality is not a modern concept. The first mention of virtual reality or VR can be traced back to Antonin Artaud, a French poet and essayist, in 1938.
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg spoke at Samsung's Galaxy S7 keynote at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) on February 21, Sunday to discuss how wearing a VR headset can be a social experience. Zuckerberg explained how devices including the newly-announced Samsung Gear 360 can be used to share VR videos of his daughter's first life experiences, with his parents.

Facebook's CEO appeared on stage right after audience members had removed their Gear VR headsets during a demo, according to USA Today. He is also scheduled to deliver a MWC keynote on Monday to discuss his company's Internet.org and net neutrality issues in developing countries.
The Facebook co-founder reported that Samsung's Gear VR headset has been used to view over one million hours of video. A free Gear VR will be added to every Galaxy S7 pre-order, which will allow millions of new people to try the gadget developed with Oculus.
Zuckerberg's appearance at the event was a surprise. It resulted in journalists rushing the stage to have selfies and photos taken with the young billionaire.
Facebook-owned Oculus will ship pre-ordered headsets next month. His company also announced the creation of a "Social VR" team, which could result in Facebook apps for Oculus VR, according to CNET.
The new Facebook team will partner with Oculus and other Facebook teams to explore how people can use VR to interact with their friends and family. In an official blog post the world's largest social network shared it will also study the long-term applications of VR as it evolves.
Facebook bought Oculus VR for $2 billion 2014. The company was founded by Palmer Luckey who raised $2 million during a Kickstarter campaign.
Luckey told CNET that one of the conditions of the Facebook-Oculus deal was that the company would stay independent. That has remained true even though most Oculus employees now work at Facebook headquarters.
Oculus has already released a "Social Alpha" feature for the Gear VR headset. It allows headset owners to watch Vimeo or Twitch videos with other Gear VR users including non-Facebook friends.
However, Facebook must still convince people that wearing VR headsets is not an anti-social activity. That could help to determine whether or not VR is the next big thing.
